After one year of negotiations between Duke students and administrators, administrators decided to increase the dining plan contract fee from $19.50 to $90 to reduce the $2.2 million deficit in Duke Dining. Although student government representatives claimed that they agreed to a temporary, one-year increase, an incoming administrator announced that the fee would continue for at least 18 months. This piece explores the process of communication within higher education and how the negotiations fell apart.
